Ohhh she looks like she’s getting ready to lay an egg sac! Hope she has a million babies. She’s definitely an Argiope, and most likely just the rather common wasp spider, Argiope bruennichi. They are occasionally more reddish than yellow and black.

Argiope bruennichi (wasp spider), i think, somewhere in France, time stamp says in September if I am to believe it... And my thumb next to it for size reference, of course.

Fact taken from the wikipedia page:  The spider builds a spiral orb web at dawn or dusk, commonly in long grass a little above ground level, taking approximately an hour. The prominent zigzag shape called the stabilimentum, or web decoration, featured at the centre of the orb is of uncertain function, but it has been shown that webs containing stabilimenta catch fewer insects because they are less cryptic, but on the other hand these webs are less often damaged by birds flying through them.

Just wanted to show off a recent successful diy :] They're a wasp and brown widow spider made from old halloween decorations, paper mache, paint, and colored tape.

Wasp Spider (Argiope bruennichi)

IUCN Conservation Status: Unassessed

Named for its striking yellow-and-black striped abdomen which is thought to mimic the warning stripes seen in many wasp species in order to deter predators, the Wasp Spider can be found across much of northern Africa, Europe and temperate Asia, where it primarily inhabits open habitats (particularly grasslands.) Like most orb-weavers, members of this species build broad, thin webs in clearings among vegetation and feed on flying insects that become snared within it; often remaining concealed around the edges of their web in order to make their trap less obvious, Wasp Spiders respond to the vibrations caused by ensnared prey struggling against the silk by springing forward, wrapping their prey in a tough silk case to prevent its escape and then injecting both venom and digestive enzymes through their flexible fangs - their prey is then digested externally, and the resulting protein-rich remains are ingested by the spider. Female Wasp Spiders (such as the individual pictured above) are drastically larger than males (growing to be around 15mm/0.6 inches long, while males rarely exceed 4.5mm/0.2 inches in length,) and like many female spiders they do not seem to distinguish between males of their own species and any other similarly-sized arthropod, as cannibalism of males by females is commonly observed. During the summer mating season, males approach females with extreme caution and attempt to carefully deposit a packet of sperm and nutrients into a reproductive orifice on the female's underside without being noticed using a pair of elongated limb-like structures called pedipalps that extend from near their mouths; if a male succeeds in mating the pedipalp he used to transfer his gametes to his mate will break off and "plug" the female's orifice for the rest of the mating season (preventing other males from introducing gametes into the female's body that would compete with his own,) although it should be noted that even after successful mating the majority of males are still caught and eaten. After mating female Wasp Spiders lay large clutches of eggs which they wrap in a tough protective sac of silk and attach to tall grasses; the adults, which are unable to endure cold temperatures, pass away in the winter, with their young emerging in the following spring.

Discovered by my friend on my birthday party. He was so excited he took everyone to see her. She used to be extremely rare in the Netherlands, but climate change has made this a suitable place for her now. Despite her ferocious look, she's not dangerous to humans at all.

01/08/23-Wasp spider, butterflies and other insects at Lakeside Country Park at lunch time

Photos in this set are of: 1 and 2. A sensational wasp spider which I was elated to see, such a delicate and beautiful spider. It was wonderful to watch it pulse in its web and marvel at seeing it. This is the first of this sought after spider I've ever seen, and one I had really wanted to see. Something bizarre happened too as I recall in late summer 2021 we saw online someone had a photo of a wasp spider at Lakeside which I didn't manage to see when looking after. But where I saw it today, in the meadow by the north eastern kissing gate entrance and beside the allotments, was a suitable long grassed area of the site I thought of as a potential place that person might have seen it. And today I wasn't gonna walk that way but changed my route last minute, simply because I was drawn to that bit of meadow. As I changed course the thoughts about the wasp spider that person saw sprang to mind, and as if by magic I saw this one. 3, 4 and 5. Just before seeing the spider, dazzling Gatekeeper on fleabane. As I walked in doing a Big Butterfly Count I was amazed when the fleabane caught my eye in flashes of sun and then I noticed a Gatekeeper, and then another and so on and this patch of flowers was teeming with them. This is always powerful to see in the count. 6 and 9. Common Blue I saw a notable amount of these in the count getting great views. 7 and 10. Meadow Brown I enjoyed seeing these too, seeing both them and Gatekeeper with open wings on a walk was quite something. 8. Brown Argus, I loved seeing a few of these too the blues seem to be doing well here of late.

There was also a notable amount of Speckled Woods in the count here with Large White, Small White and just before getting to Lakeside out the front a Red Admiral enjoyed. Six-spot Burnet moth was good to see too and underneath the wasp spider was a grasshopper. I also liked seeing a Common Red Soldier beetle.

edit: people are starting to say some "my worst nightmare" or "eeeww no that one is yucky and scary" comments on this like they do on any bug post and id like to say. it's fine if you don't like bugs it's fine if you're scared of bugs but don't put that on MY post clearly talking about how much i like them and how cute i think they are. you can make your own damn post about how much you hate wasps or spiders or whatever. i'm blocking people who make these kinds of comments.

when people say "ok but x bug has no benefit to nature" I bet they can't even name 5 facts about the bug they're shitting on. so how could they Possibly know what its function is in the environment and if it's "useless" or not

wasps being the perfect example, I still get people saying "oh bees are cute and pollinate :) yay. but WASPS ARE EVIL and they don't contribute ANYTHING!!!" and it's like buddy. wasps pollinate too. they also control spider populations. they do a lot of great valuable things. but even if they didn't, they're still worthy of being here. I see SO much hatred toward wasps and I wish people would try to learn a little more about them.

I'm mainly talking about paper wasps here because these are common ones we run into in daily life and most commonly deemed "aggressive". but wasps have body language. and if you learn to read this language and learn how to properly act around them, things will go a lot better for you! wasps can be curious creatures and they may come up to observe you, especially if you're wearing something brightly colored. this can be startling for sure, but my best advice is to just be still, DO NOT SWAT or wave your arms. try to just back away or sidestep so it loses interest and leaves. swatting is just gonna make them feel as if they are being attacked and increase your chances of being stung.

many stings happen due to unfortunate but accidental circumstances. unknowingly getting too close to a nest, stepping on a wasp on accident, one getting stuck in clothing, etc. I got stung once while gardening, went to pull a weed and the wasp was on it, so I grabbed her without knowing and she stung me because she was scared. this doesn't mean "oh wasps are AGGRESSIVE and EVIL" it means you stumbled into an unfortunate situation where the wasps felt threatened and defensive. instead of being like "FUCK all wasps" go forward trying to learn about common nesting areas, be wary of holes in the ground, wear gloves while gardening, and if you do have to be around a nest, try not to make a lot of noise. if the nest absolutely needs removed, call a professional.
